about

When Jack Henderson first heard of the REDress Project in 2019, he was moved to write the song “Red Dress” about missing and murdered Native American Women from Canada and the United States.

In 2010, the Native Canadian artist Jaime Black instituted the REDress Project hanging red dresses in public spaces to speak to the silence surrounding thousands of Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women in Canada. Her installations provide, “a visual reminder of the staggering number of women who are no longer with us ... and evoke a presence through the marking of absence.”

The song is released on May 5th on Fretsore Records and proceeds will be donated to charity.

“Tragically, the abuse and exploitation of women remains an international problem,” Henderson said. “’Red Dress’ extends the symbol of the red dress, used in Black’s work to raise awareness of murdered and missing indigenous women, to raise a voice for women who have suffering from brutality, abuse, trafficking and murder everywhere.”

Henderson was gigging to promote his most recent album, Where’s The Revolution, released on Fretsore Records, when the label’s managing director Ian Sephton heard Jack perform “Red Dress” in the set.

"I was immediately moved by the melody and lyrics when I heard it and insisted it was recorded at the earliest opportunity. It had not been recorded during the Where’s The Revolution sessions, so his powerful live solo performance of the song was my first exposure to it." Sephton said.

lyrics

RED DRESS
There’s a red dress hanging in a dogwood tree
There for everyone to see
Better call the sheriff ‘cos he ain’t come yet
Round here they’re inclined to forget
There’s a red dress hanging in a dogwood tree

Summer breeze on the highway of tears
Takes a ride and disappears
What the Red River already knows
History will disclose
There’s a red dress hanging in a dogwood tree

Another ghost beneath the water
Someone’s sister someone’s daughter
Another mystery that never will unfold
Another story that forever goes untold

From Cariboo to Aberdeen
Bucharest to Bethnal Green
For every voice that’s been denied
For every tear that’s never dried

There’s a red dress
Hanging in a dogwood tree

A red dress hanging in a dogwood tree
A red dress
A red dress
There’s a red dress hanging in a dogwood tree

Written and Performed by Jack Henderson
Recorded @ Big Mono and Castlesound Studios

Mattie Foulds - Drums
Karin Berquist - Backing Vocals
Kevin McGuire - Bass

Mixed by Mattie Foulds

The initial recording was done at CastleSound in Scotland with Henderson singing all the vocals. Overdubs were done at Henderson's own studio with Jack asking his friend Karin Bergquist of Cincinnati band Over The Rhine to contribute backing vocals.

This haunting contemporary ballad features Henderson on vocals, guitars and Hammond B3, ably supported by Scottish based Canadian Mattie Foulds (Karine Polwart, Kate Rusby), on drums and Scottish bass player Kevin McGuire (Eddi Reader, Karen Matheson).

“I hope this small contribution, helps towards keeping this tragedy in the public awareness. I'm also acutely aware that violence and abuse against women remains a serious cultural issue across all our societies,” Henderson said. "For women suffering brutality and abuse anywhere, there's a Red Dress hanging in a dogwood tree."
